Straight Lines

Straight lines are a great place to start for students who are still learning basic scissor control. Encourage the child to begin at the bottom of each line and snip upward toward the dot. This works on bilateral coordination, hand strength, visual-motor coordination, and controlled opening and closing of the scissors.
Curved Lines

Once straight lines are becoming easier, curved paths add another challenge. Students have to coordinate the scissors with subtle paper rotation using their non-dominant hand, which helps build motor planning, bilateral coordination, and graded scissor control.
Zigzag Lines

Zigzags require more precise changes in direction. Students practice stopping, repositioning the paper, and changing the angle of the scissors as they follow each sharp turn. This makes them a great activity for working on visual-motor integration, motor planning, and more advanced scissor control.
You can also print the activities on slightly heavier paper or cardstock to provide a little more stability for beginners.
