Here are simple, effective activities parents and caregivers can use to support pincer grasp development at home. These are easy to set up and work well across stages:
Early pincer activities
- Finger feeding small soft foods (puffs, cereal, banana pieces)
- Picking up pom-poms or cotton balls with fingers
- Peeling stickers and placing them on paper
- Pulling tissues or scarves out of a box
Developing pincer grasp
- Picking up small objects (beans, beads, cereal) and dropping them into a container
- Posting activities (coins into a piggy bank, shapes into slots)
- Turning pages in board books (encourage fingertip use)
- Velcro pull-apart toys
Strengthening mature pincer grasp
- Playdough pinch and roll using thumb and index finger
- Using tweezers or tongs to pick up small items
- Button boards or snap toys
- Stringing large beads or pasta onto a shoelace
